“Without music, life would be a mistake”

I have been inundated with letters, emails and cards congratulating everyone involved in last week's Choral Concert. This special event bought together the many facets of the Arnold family (pupils, parents, former pupils and parents, grandparents and friends of the school) who all share a love and passion for music-making. A well-filled Memorial Hall was moved and entranced by all the singers and musicians; it was extraordinary. However, it was two Sixth Form pupils who really stole the show. The two soloists, Lauren Au and Robert Brocklehurst, were exceptional and it was quite clear why they have earned choral scholarships to Oxford and Cambridge respectively.

Not wishing to be outdone, the Junior School Choir performed 'Robin Hood and Friends' for an appreciative audience on Thursday.  Unfortunately, I couldn't be there as I was attending a Local Governing Body meeting but my wife told me that I missed a spectacular show, packed with talent and enthusiasm from pupils in Years 4, 5 and 6.  I'm sure that Old Arnoldian Jonas Armstrong, better known to many as the BBC's Robin Hood, would be delighted to learn that junior pupils are emulating his dramatic success in Sherwood Forest! I am looking forward to watching highlights from the show at the Junior School Grandparents' Afternoon this Thursday. Very well done to everyone involved.

I have spent many an hour over the last week poring over the reports of our senior pupils. I have been particularly encouraged to read the many comments that praise their positive work ethic. However, as we move into the business part of the school year it is crucial that everyone with public examinations focuses on the task in hand and uses the coming weeks sensibly. It is amazing what can be achieved with a structured and extensive revision programme. As always, teaching staff are here to offer additional support and guidance as the examinations draw closer.

Our cricketers depart for the Caribbean this week. There is something about a sports tour that is magical... there is the prospect of mixing the excitement of visiting foreign climes with playing a favourite sport; of pitting ones abilities against unknown opposition and sharing the experience with friends and foe alike. There is the joy of foreign hospitality: of being welcomed into schools and finding much in common with the hosts. There is the thrill of experiencing different cultures and seeing new things. Not only magical: it's memorable too.  You might be able to sense the envy in what I write! I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents and staff for their efforts in making the tour possible. You will be able to follow the boys' progress during the tour on the website.

As we approach Easter, may I take this opportunity to wish you a relaxing break.

Best wishes
