Dr Treharne completed a BSc in Biological Sciences and a PhD in Biometrical Genetics at the University of Birmingham. He is a member of the university's Court as an elected representative of the Guild of Graduates and Alumni Association. Before joining Arnold in 1998 he taught at Handsworth Grammar School in Birmingham where he was a Housemaster.
He has been involved in Biology education at a national level for several years and is currently Chairman of UK Biology Competitions, a Special Interest Group of the Society of Biology, which organises the British Biology Olympiad and Biology Challenge. In 2009 he was elected to Fellowships of the Society of Biology and the Linnean Society of London
