Hockey Success
Three impressive wins at the regional round of the National Schools Hockey competition means that Arnold's U16 team have now reached the North Final of this tough competition and are now just one step away from the National Final.
In the first game against Liverpool College, an impressive first-half display saw captain Emily Adams give her team the lead with a first time shot in the circle. Another Emily Adams goal, and one from Emily Owen, gave the team a 3-0 lead at half time. Arnold dominated the second half. There were further goals from Molly Betmead, Lucy Whalley and Jessica Omassoli who, on returning from injury, scored with her first touch of the game!
The next game against Queen's Chester was much closer, with Arnold's keeper Eleni Cullen being forced to make an impressive early save. The defence had their work cut out in the first half with Rosie Gillis and Claire Thistlethwaite defending well and sweeper Rebecca Pearson making some decisive tackles. An unstoppable penalty corner strike from Emily Adams took some of the pressure off to give Arnold a 1-0 first half lead, very much against the run of play. A better second half saw Arnold make it 2-0, when a mighty Emily Adams penalty corner strike was deflected into the roof of the net by an opposition defender. Francesca Beeby earned the applause of both sets of spectators, scoring what was the goal of the tournament, with an edge of the circle shot from the right, after two quick successive passes from Lucy Whalley and Victoria Matthews.
This 3-0 win meant that Arnold went into the semi-final as winners of their group and played Casterton School the runners up from the other group. This match proved to be easier than expected, and a superb team display resulted in a decisive 9-0 wins. Goal-scorers were Emily Adams (4) Francesca Beeby (2) Emily Owen and Lucy Whalley.
Arnold will now go on to represent the region at the North Final which will be held on Friday 9th. December at Leeds University. We wish them well.
