A week of highs and lows

Sunday offered up one of those marvellous treats that lucky Headmasters get every now and then; my wife and I had been invited to watch the world premiere of Howard Goddall's Oratorio at Westminster Abbey where, as you know, Aimee Desmond, Chloe McConville and Grace Card were to sing in the choir alongside pupils from other UCST schools. After wandering in the twilight through Westminster Abbey's scarlet Field of Remembrance and retracing some royal footsteps (!), Sally and I eagerly took our seats.

The whole experience was magical and we were totally enthralled. The rest of the congregation obviously shared our strong emotions because there was a prolonged standing ovation afterwards - the first time I have ever experienced this in a church. Sally echoed my own feelings when she said "I wonder if the girls realise what they've just been a part of... just how special this night is?" It was obvious however, when we saw Aimee, Chloe and Grace, that they understood. They were wreathed in beaming smiles and were quite literally trembling with excitement. Their emotional reaction brought tears to my eyes. Arnold can be very proud of them.

I am also fiercely proud of our many cadets who attended the Remembrance Service in Blackpool on Sunday and represented their school with dignity and pride. Thank you. Edward Farrer also deserves a special mention for performing the Guard of Honour at the Cenotaph in St Annes. Well done everyone.

Another highlight of my week has been looking at Michael Smith's splendid competition-winning photographs. What a talent.

Sally and I would like to thank governors, colleagues, parents and pupils alike for the overwhelming practical and emotional support you have given our family this week. I managed to chat with many pupils in the Senior School today and also went over to see all the boys and girls in the Junior School, where I was able to reassure our very youngest pupils that their Headmaster is fit and well. I enjoyed the luxury of working from home for a couple of days but happily it's now 'business as usual'.

I trust that many of you will be coming to the PFA Christmas Fayre on Saturday. This is a great school event and I believe that a rather special visitor may be making his first appearance of the festive season too...

Best wishes
